Robert F. Holmes

Robert F. Holmes of Havre de Grace, MD died April 18, 2016. He was 90 years old.

Born June 7, 1925, the only son of Albro and Iva Holmes of Johnstown, New York.

After graduating from Johnstown High School in 1943, he entered the US Navy's Submarine Service. As a Torpedoman Second CLass, he completed six war patrols in the Pacific aboard the USS Seahorse. During that time he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and received numerous letters of commendation from his commanding officer.

Foloowing his Honorable Discharge in 1946, he matriculated at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. From there he was employed as Executive Director for the New York Tuberculosis Association at Lewis and Cortland counties.

Subsequent to this he entered the photographic business as owner of Crown Photo in Cortland, New York and later took the position of Youth Director of the Cortland, Auburn and New Rochelle, New York YMCAs.

In 1963 he accepted the position of Director of Activities at the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown, PA. Remaining there until 1974 when he left to become the Director of Theraputic Recreation at the South Mountain Restoration Center, an establishment for the mentally ill operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. He retired from this position in 1989.

Following his retirement, he volunteered as Director of Chambersburg Deaf Services in Chambersburg, PA. After moving to Havre de Grace, MDin 1996 he volunteered as an assistant instructor of photograhy at Harford COmmunity College and in the graphics shop of the Harford Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Holmes involved himself in numerous activities, including amatuer radio, golf, trap and target shooting, teaching sign language, photography and sailing. He was also active in the Northern Star Hunter Saining Association for many years.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his son, Douglas Holmes and daugher Diane Smith of Auburn, NY, Brian Holmes of Fairfield, PA, and his long time friend Judy Horne of Havre de Grace, MD.
