Thomas John Powers

Born: Sat Mar 7, 1925
Died: Mon Nov 29, 2010

On November 29, 2010, We lost one of our most dedicated members. Tom was our representative to CBYCA for many years. He and Agnes joined NSHSA in 1992 and supported the club since the begining. Anyone who ever spent time with him knew the enthusiasm that he had for the club and sailing. He will be sorely missed.

His obituary read: Thomas John Powers, Beloved husband of the late Agnes D. Powers (NEE Agostine). Devoted father of Lorraine Sunder, Lawrence Powers, Noreen Goodson, Regina Powers and Monica Powers. Loving grandfather of Aaron Goodson. Dear brother of Dolores Gintling and the late William Powers and Donald Powers.

Eddie Sabol visited Tom shortly after the Commodore's Ball in early November and provided this report:
>>>>It was a good visit with Tom last night, he is still very ambulatory though he now has a hospital bed on the first floor so he does not need to negotiate a flight of steps. While intending to spend a half hour as he was to get a visit at 5, I was there an hour and a half. The priest was late and he was enjoying the conversation. He told me while originally training to be a Tug Captain that his Captain told him one Saturday while they were in the Harbour that his daughter was over in Canton receiving Confirmation. At that point he envisioned his life without witnessing those events and found work at Bethlehem Steel where he trained and joined the Refrigeration group working 35 years until retirement at 62 in 1987.
 >>>>He has been busy with helping his family sort through a lifetime of living. His one concern is that his children will have lost both their parents in the one year. His brother who passed away this year struggled with Leukemia for eight years, and lived in constant pain, he did not want to go this way so when he found out in June that the cancer returned and that he had spots on his liver he conscientiously decided not undergo Chemo.
>>>> In addition to being the Clubs CBYCA representative, as many know he was/is the CBYCA Historian, he was also the Historian for another club and has been busy working to hand over his duties.
>>>>He feels blessed with his active life that for many his age they have seen their friends dwindle over the years, he has not.  His family setup a laptop in his room and he has Fios, he had forgotten the club pass code, so I wrote it down for him and helped him login although he does not have office, and could not open the XL file through Firefox… his daughter was going to try and get him a hardcopy… I will see how they made out. But the important thing is he is checking his e-mails, and working to say his goodbyes. I would encourage anyone with the time to call and arrange for a visit, he really seemed to enjoy it.

He has been one of the most loyal members of the club for many years.  He took over the CBYCA meetings for the club under my term as Commodore.  He never missed a meeting, and always gave very informative reports to the membership.  Before Tom  took this position, we had a hard time getting members to regularly attend these meetings. We got "perfect attendance" plaques due to Tom's regular attendance.  He also became a valuable asset to CBYCA. Tom performed his duties...as he has lived his life...with honor, dignity, diligence and reliability.  He has been an NSHSA unsung treasure for too long.
